I have had a lot of them throughout the past year, and I am officially tired of them. Ladies, hormones have the power to take you down. It’s time we armed ourselves and refused to let these suckers win. They smack you once a month, trample you while you’re pregnant, and then steamroll you after you give birth. Die, hormones, die! (Oh wait, that might not be the mind-body-soul approach…)

Here’s the deal. Hormones take your normal stressful thoughts and magnify them. No, I take that back. They don’t just magnify them. They mutate them.

Normal Stressful Thought: I think my butt looks big in these jeans.

Stressful Thought on Hormones: I am the ugliest human being in the history of the world and I don’t even deserve to wear clothing.

If you’ve read my complimentary ebook (grab your copy here top right box), Hear Your Soul, Heal Yourself, you know all about my favorite mind-tool – Mind Whispering. Mind-Whispering takes on a whole new feel when you’re under hormonal attack. This is why I felt it useful to write a post about this. When you Mind-Whisper during a hormonal surge, you must be prepared.

Things you’ll need:

  • A notebook
  • Courage
  • A friend

On your calendar, you might want to put some kind of giant red notation that says “Beware of Hormonal Surges” when you expect things to get a little hairy. If – like me –  you’re in a constant state of hormonal flux, that may not help. You’ll just have to be constantly vigilant. Don’t worry – we’re in it together.

Here’s what you do. Grab your notebook and write down the mutated thoughts happening during any particular surge. You’ll know it’s a surge because everything will seem awful. It will seem as if the world is ending, all hope is lost, and everyone thinks you’re ridiculous. You’ll feel overly sensitive and painfully insecure. (Well – you already know this, I’m sure!) Next, pluck up your courage. Then, phone, email, or text your pre-arranged friend. (I think of this as your Hormone Buddy.) Admit to them your mutant thoughts. Say to them that you are having a hormonal surge. Receive the kind words they send back to you.

You can do this on your own, too, but it’s much more enjoyable with a friend. Admitting your thoughts to someone else helps you create some distance from them, helps you realize that they’ve mutated, and reminds you that you’re in Hormone Reality – which is not really real at all. If you’re in a pinch, though, and a friend isn’t available, you can simply say to yourself, “Stop! This is a Mutant Hormone Thought!” Then choose a different path of thinking. Actively recognize what’s happening in your mind so that you aren’t sucked in to the hormone quicksand. I often do that AND phone a friend. Hey, like I said – we must arm ourselves!

And that is the latest from my trench. The postpartum hormone surges have lessened, but they still happen. I often feel like I’m a different person during them. I have to really get strong with the Mind-Whispering and be extra kind to myself. Care to share from your trench? Pop on over to the Anamsong Facebook page!
