Debby healed from chronic pain, and you can, too! https://abigailsteidley.com/debby-healed-chronic-pain-can/ https://abigailsteidley.com/debby-healed-chronic-pain-can/#comments Thu, 16 Feb 2017 14:18:47 +0000 https://abigailsteidley.com/?p=10735 Continue reading Debby healed from chronic pain, and you can, too!]]> Debby was struggling with pelvic pain and back pain.

She wasn’t able to work much and was in constant pain. I learned her story from an email she sent me last year, and it was a very familiar story indeed. Like myself and all of my clients have experienced, she was at her wits end.

She’d tried affirmations, positive thinking, meditation, and many other techniques.

In fact, when she emailed me, she sent me a list of all the things she’d tried in order to heal herself. Nothing had worked.

She was interested in taking my Mind-Body Coach Training , because she hoped to learn something that would help. Yet, she was very skeptical. (And, who wouldn’t be? After trying everything, a person tends to get a little doubtful.)

She sent me her list of things she’d tried, and she said, “Is there anything in your training that I haven’t already done? Do you have anything that I haven’t tried that would actually help me heal?”

From her list, I could see that everything she’d tried was, indeed, useful and helpful.

But, after years and years of working with people in pain, I can spot the places where a person needs specific tools and knowledge to troubleshoot a mind-body healing journey.

So, I emailed Debby back. I told her that yes, I did see exactly why she hadn’t healed yet, and yes, she could absolutely heal. The mind-body tools I use would, indeed, be effective, and she could be on her way to health. I explained everything in detail so that she could see exactly where the gaps were in her mind-body healing process.

Debby decided to try the mind-body tools and see what the results would be.

I knew Debby was skeptical, and she even asked me to promise, during the first week of Mind-Body Coach Training, that she could be pain-free. I had to laugh, because she was so forthright in her skepticism. She was not a true believer, but she was so willing to give it a shot. I promised her that yes, if she applied what she was learning, she could be out of pain. Of course there’s never any guarantee, but I could see her determination. I could feel her strength. I believed in her.

She took the Mind-Body Coach Training because she wanted to learn every tool and trick I have up my sleeve. She dove right in and went for it. She gave it her all.

So what happened?

Here’s Debby’s story in her own words:

I’m healed!

I’m pain free after four-years of daily, debilitating pelvic and lower-back pain.

These mind-body tools and methodology work.

As an experienced master certified Martha Beck life coach, before signing up, I asked Abigail if she really had something different. I needed to hear it out loud. She said yes, clearly and confidently.

After all the doctors, specialist, chiropractic manipulations, physical therapies (external and internal), tailbone and sacroiliac joint injections, hypnotherapy, acupuncture, massage, tai chi, and yoga, this felt like my last hope.

I learned a lot, applied, and integrated. Made amazing new friends and am now coaching clients using these amazing tools and methodology.

This coach training was life changing. I have my life and mobility back.
It was worth every penny, moment of study, and application of each and every tool.

Thank you Abigail!
Debby

Though Debby wrote that testimonial to thank me, the reality is, she did it all herself. I supplied the tools, but she put them to practice in her life. She was willing to look past her own doubt and try it anyway. The Debby I know today is full of joy, passion, and excitement for helping others heal, too. I’m grateful that she joined the training simply because it was magical to watch her transform. I’m honored to have been a part of her journey and path.

I share her story because I want you to have lots of hope and inspiration for your healing journey. However you choose to learn mind-body healing, you, too, can create health. All you need is a little determination. (There are tons of great mind-body tools free here on the blog, by the way!)

Why You’re Ready to Help Others Heal https://abigailsteidley.com/why-youre-ready-to-help-others-heal/ Thu, 19 Mar 2015 13:23:22 +0000 https://abigailsteidley.com/?p=6314 Continue reading Why You’re Ready to Help Others Heal]]> mbcu-buttonRegistration for my 2015 Mind-Body Coach Training is open!

Which makes me think back to the very beginning…

In my early twenties, I spent most of my time lying on the couch, unable to wear underwear, jeans, or even use the restroom without pain. I felt hopeless. I was struggling with vulvodynia, interstitial cystitis, pelvic floor dysfunction, constant anxiety, and terrible self-esteem. I was overweight. I was in a very, very, low place.

Finding the courage to embark on a quest to heal was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I had to dig myself out of that pit and create a new life for myself. There was only the tiniest seed of hope in the huge dirt-pile of despair.

What would I have loved to have had during that time?

A mind-body coach.

Someone who understood how to help me use my own mind-body system to create well-being.

Someone who had walked a similar path and understood.

Someone who had compassion and empathy for me and also believed in me.

I was my own coach throughout my healing process. The arduous journey I was on made me want to help others. I wanted to be the someone for them that I’d wanted for me.

I felt the pull to work with others even before I was completely pain-free, before I had newfound confidence, and before I lost the weight.

What did I do? I became a coach. There were other people out there, suffering from TMS or Mind-Body Syndrome. I knew them. I understood them. I felt compassion. We were fellow travelers. And in becoming a coach, I found confidence, strength, and knowledge so I could truly help those people.

After I finished my training, I took my specific expertise around mind-body healing and created my own coaching method. It’s designed to specifically help people with pain relief, anxiety/stress relief, creativity, intuitive awakening, and spiritual growth.

Which brings me to YOU.

Even if you think you haven’t walked far enough on your healing path to become a coach, it’s time. If you have read to this point in this post, you are feeling the same pull that I did. My Mind-Body Coach Training is designed to take you through the healing tools first, before you head out and coach. You’ll have the support, the learning, and the path to develop your skills, and you do not have to be “done,” “perfect,” or “completely healed” to start the training.

We’ll focus on you first and foremost throughout the training, because that’s what will make you a great coach. You’ll be ready. You’ll have such solid mentoring and training that you’ll know you can do it (even if you’re a bit nervous – which is, by the way, NORMAL!).

Whomever you are meant to help, whomever you are meant to guide into the world of mind-body healing – they are waiting. This mind-body thing has been a quiet revolution, and we are on the leading edge in my Mind-Body Coach Community. We never stop learning and growing, and you won’t, either. Which means your clients will be so glad they found YOU.

I can’t possibly coach all the people who want help via the mind-body tools you’ll learn in the 2015 Mind-Body Coach Training They need you. You are ready.

DO it.

Here’s a note from Rebecca, who took the training in 2014:

“Attending Abigail’s Mind Body Coach training became a dream of mine when I discovered her in 2012.  Even though my inner wisdom was speaking to me then, I just didn’t know how to really tap in and listen.  That being said, this training has taught me how to ‘tune into my body’ to hear and translate the sensations that speak my mind.  Once integrated, this piece alone allowed me to turn toward my emotions, without resistance, and notice what my mind was doing with clarity not scarcity.  AHHHH so freeing.  Also, I noticed my inner knowing/wisdom organically flowed from this balance—without efforting.  Imagine that!  I can’t remember a time where I have felt clearer, more open and inspired in my life.  The tools taught are ones that will kindly support my clients and me for a lifetime.  Truly.  The unexpected plus of this training…. it has refined me as life coach – I’m coaching with a new passion, with empathy and compassion, along with trusting my intuition about how best to serve the client.  But it DID all start with me doing my own work first!”

by Endorsed Mind-Body Coach CrisMarie Campbell

Even before I became an Endorsed Mind-Body Coach, I subscribed to the belief that what I don’t feel, shows up in my body. In his book the Mindbody Prescription, Dr. Sarno describes this linkage quite well.  But instead of dealing with my discomfort with anger, sadness and all those icky-ucky feelings that can be a part of one’s life, I focused on solving my physical ailments by looking for the answers outside of myself. As I result I wound up choosing:

  • Relationships that I didn’t want because I didn’t think I had a choice.
  • Careers I didn’t want because I didn’t think I had a choice.
  • Friends I didn’t want because I didn’t think I had a choice.

I had developed a habit of listening to people outside of myself and not making my own feelings matter. I focused on achieving and making others happy in order to gain approval and success in life. And succeed I did. On the outside it didn’t look bad at all. I had a successful consulting business. I lived in a great house. I was acting in the community theater and had a great relationship. However, I found myself saying, “I hate my life,” which I didn’t understand.

So what was the problem?

Ring of Fire

Rather than pretend that everything was okay or look for answers outside of me from yet another doctor or guru, I went through Abigail Steidley’s Mind-Body Coach Training and looked inside. There were two main things I did (and still do):

  • I learned how to slow down and land or grounded in my own feet. Yes, energetically, I am constantly out of my own body and focused on my environment. I developed a practice of bringing my energy back into my own shoes. As I do this, I usually take a deeper breath.
  • Then, I get curious about: What am I feeling, now? This may sound simple, but when I first started doing this, I did it about 50 times a day, because I didn’t know how I felt. I was so used to not knowing, having ignored my feelings for so long.

The Mind-Body training was transformational for me. I am someone who didn’t realize that I regularly dissociate from my body and don’t know how I feel. Going through the Mind-Body training helped me land in my own two feet, my body and feel what was really going on inside me. This lead to making more self-honoring choices in my life.

Sure, I plummeted into a “Ring of Fire” which was certainly uncomfortable, but it was a way of catching up to myself and realizing that I matter. The training was a pivotal point in my life to help me learn how to continually re-align my life to my souls’ wisdom. I think it is a phenomenal experience!

So here is how you can give it a try: slow down and land in your own body. Ask yourself, “What am I feeling now?” and make what you feel on the inside matter more than what is on the outside, even for just a minute. See if you get any information that you can use to take care of yourself more effectively.

And in the process, if taking Abigail Steidley’s Mind-Body Coach Training is calling to you, apply now.   You and your body will be so happy you did!

As for me, I quit my job and left my relationship. I wound up meeting someone that I am still in a relationship with. We started our own company together, thrive!, and moved to Montana. I took up acting and have since been in five plays. And I have finally gotten around to writing—doing what I wanted to do oh so long ago.

Being in the Light Flow https://abigailsteidley.com/being-in-the-light-flow/ https://abigailsteidley.com/being-in-the-light-flow/#comments Thu, 13 Feb 2014 17:46:53 +0000 http://abigailsteidley.com/?p=5029 Continue reading Being in the Light Flow]]> (Pic: Light Flow)

By Endorsed Mind-Body Coach Gail Kenny

Every now and then, but more often these days, I experience a sense of synchronicity when my internal and external perceptions are congruent and seemingly tuned in together. It’s as if I’m not a separate being but I’m connected and in the flow with the world around me. I become one with my environment and it feels like bliss.

The Unbearable Lightness of Being

I made the decision to pursue mind-body coach training with Abigail in November 2009. I had been considering it for months, but one day at the end of my morning meditation it all clicked for me as I realized I got to do this for me. When I allowed myself to open in this way, it felt like “the unbearable lightness of being” and it brought tears to my eyes as my heart and mind opened to my truth in this new life path.

Light or Weighty Approach

“The Unbearable Lightness of Being” is also the name of a book by Milan Kundera. I saw the movie in 1988 and promptly read the book. The exploration of the philosophy of life in this novel had an impact on me as it considered approaching life in a light way or a weighty way. I have lived most of my life from a “weighty” perspective and this lighter way of being felt exciting and open and right at the same time it was fleeting and seemingly impossible. In the years since I had small glimpses of the lightness of being where boundaries blurred and I flowed with life, but these experiences were few and far between.

Letting Life Unfold

These days I’m feeling this lightness of being and flow more and more. I feel it as I open my heart more, let go of my will to make life happen the way I planned, and let it unfold for me. It’s way more fun even while it feels risky. I feel my connection to everything, especially people, when I can pivot my focus and attention to what is actually happening rather than what I expect to happen. It lets me be more present to what is here in the moment. The alternative is to be critical of what’s happening and try to use my will to change it. This creates an energetic protection which makes it harder to connect with that which is in me and around me. It creates a standoffishness making it difficult to be authentic with what is actually present. This creates tension in my body, triggers fear and the fight or flight response which feels uncomfortable and even painful.

A Blended Part of the Whole

When I take what is present for me in each moment both internally and externally as a mirror and feedback of me as a blended part of the whole I get inspired and validated and it’s way, way, more fun! For example, I have a simple practice of pulling an Angel Card each day. The day I was to meet with a group of mind-body coaches to support each other in growing our businesses, the angel card I pulled was “Sisterhood Brotherhood” which means “View humanity as your extended family and reach out with acts of kindness to all you meet.” It was perfect for me and my group.

As my idea for this blog post was forming, this quote from Martha Beck’s book “Steering by Starlight,” landed in my inbox: “Every time I have managed to eliminate all past and future thoughts from my brain and then accept the present moment absolutely, I’ve experienced the Stargazer’s incredible bliss, the feeling I can’t possibly describe and you can’t possibly imagine unless you’ve been there yourself.” Later I dreamed about watching a meteor shower which left me with a feeling of wonderment.

And I was reading a book called “Mind of The Raven” by biologist Bernd Heinrich. He describes trying to trap ravens in order to radio tag them and study their behavior and how hard it is to conceal the trap and his effect in the environment near a raven’s nest because the ravens notice the subtlest changes. Once his energy is added to the raven’s environment, it’s hard to know what the behavior of the raven would be without it. I looked up Bernd Heinrich’s website and I watched his video in which he was wearing a sweater with the night sky showing stars in it. This image resonates with the “Steering by Starlight” quote above and my dream about a meteor shower. These are the connections I notice when I’m in the flow rather than trying to control it.

Illusions of Separateness

The incredible lightness of being feels like a moment when thoughts, emotions, physical sensations and spirit are all connected and working as one while illusions of separateness are blurred. Life gives us constant feedback reminding us that everything is connected. The more we can be aware of our communication with what‘s in and around us, instead of resisting, or being focused on the past or future, the more information and validation we have for the interconnectedness of everything and the more open we are to experience the bliss being a participant in the universe.

Doing It Quick and Dirty https://abigailsteidley.com/doing-it-quick-and-dirty/ https://abigailsteidley.com/doing-it-quick-and-dirty/#comments Thu, 27 Sep 2012 07:00:14 +0000 http://abigailsteidley.com/?p=4460 Continue reading Doing It Quick and Dirty]]> Mind-body healing is amazing. Mind-body healing has no boundaries. With the selection of skills at your fingertips, you are equipped for anything and everything. You feel as if you could fight crime with these skills.

But…are there so many skills that you don’t even know where to start, and you feel overwhelmed because you want to use all of them every day and then you end up using, well, none of them?

Rest assured, I have been there. People who end up getting a mind-body syndrome tend to share some similar qualities, one of them being perfectionism. How am I going to find time to consistently use all of these mind-body skills, while making sure to still find time to feed myself and show up at work on time? I’ve often found myself putting pressure on myself to approach mind-body healing with this one principle: all or nothing. (I tend to gravitate towards the all or nothing approach with things like exercise and eating healthy, too.) But the truth is the only thing the all or nothing approach will do is stall your entire healing process. If you are putting pressure on yourself to do it perfectly, like using the skills every hour on the hour, using a minimum of five skills per day, trying to use these skills around the clock, etc., you are missing the whole point.

And yes, I have missed the whole point more than a few hundred times. I have put pressure on myself to do it all, and if I don’t do it all, then I am just not doing enough to get to where I want to get in my mind-body journey. But when we are putting pressure on ourselves to be in mind-body healing mode 24/7, that is really what will hold us back from getting to where we want to get, whether it’s pain relief, weight loss, or building a successful business. When we are forcing ourselves to do it all, we are not being kind to ourselves. And being kind to ourselves IS the whole point.

So how can we be kind to ourselves and take all that heavy, uncomfortable pressure off while still ensuring that we are making some time to play with the mind-body tools? Well, you can get still and ask your inner guidance this question and I’m confident it will give you a brilliant answer, or you can learn what I’ve adopted, and if your body feels like the shackles that you have put on yourself have been loosened or released from your wrists, then I think we are on to something. And it is easy peasy.

So what have I done to make mind-body healing feel less overwhelming? I simply use one tool over and over and over and over and…well, you get the point. I ask myself, “what am I feeling emotionally right NOW?” and wait for the answer, and repeat it as much or as little as I want throughout the day. It literally takes five seconds, maybe ten to twenty seconds when you’re first starting. It’s quick and dirty, as Abigail likes to put it, but it creates loads of awareness on your body and emotions, which is the key to mind-body healing.

I will give you an example of how I use this quick and dirty method. While walking down the stairs one morning to get a cup of tea I asked myself what I was feeling emotionally. I took a full breath, released it, and waited to see what came up. Not even five seconds later I noticed my body felt heavy. I prodded a bit more, and asked if this heavy feeling was because I felt somewhat mad, sad, glad, or scared. Out of the four options, I felt more mad than anything. Ok, cool, I thought, as I poured tea into my mug. Now I knew that I had some anger to feel and get more information about. I stopped there for the time being. Yep, quick and dirty, but it got me to check in with my body, check in with my emotions, and get some valuable information: I had some anger in my body to feel. I told myself I would feel the anger later on in the day when I had some time to do so. Easy peasy.

If you wanted to take it one step further in that moment, you could have carried on with another mind-body skill. What I love about asking myself what am I feeling emotionally, is that uncovering the emotion generally takes the guessing out of which tool to use. In the moment I felt anger, I could have simply felt the emotion. This could mean getting descriptive with how it feels, where it is, how big it is, and asking it what it would want to say if it could talk. You could stop there, or you could continue on once you uncover what it has to say. Maybe doing some thought dissolving work – like Byron Katie’s The Work – would apply here, or some Mind Whispering, or whatever seems perfect in that moment. Letting your emotions lead your mind-body healing process tends to guide you towards the perfect skills in that moment.

The beauty of adopting a quick and dirty What Am I Feeling Emotionally Right Now method is that it is so flexible. You could ask yourself, get an answer and stop there, or you could continue on and use another tool that feels perfect in that situation and then stop there, or you could continue on from there. But it helps knowing where to start. And even if you stop early in this process (which I so often do!), like after you ask yourself what you’re feeling, it doesn’t mean you can’t pick up where you left off later in the day, or even the next day. I love this no-pressure approach because it feels more fun when I decide to go in full throttle with the mind-body skills! And being kind to yourself and having some fun while you carry on with your journey with the mind-body skills will get you to where you want to go, which is truly what it’s all about.

A year ago, I was sitting here at this same desk, planning last year’s Mind-Body Coach Training. I was imagining a great group of trainees, fixing up the forum where they would interact, and sending out the announcements in my newsletter. I thought I knew exactly what my plans were for the next couple of years. I’d train one last round of coaches. I’d build a new website, and I’d continue creating with my business partners. I’d scale back my own business and do a lot more collaboration. I moved forward quickly, as usual, with all of my plans.

There was just one, tiny problem.

I wasn’t listening to my soul. Oops. I am really, really good at suppressing my true feelings and not listening to my inner-most guidance. This is why I focus on the practice of trusting and following my own inner wisdom so much. I can so easily forget this and barrel forward, ignoring important signals from inside myself.

I’ve been down this road before, of course. Many years ago, my body had to wake me up to this pattern of ignoring myself by literally immobilizing me with physical pain. I grudgingly began to listen to its messages and actually tune in to myself. Searing pain in one’s privates is most definitely motivational. Once I realized what my body was trying to get me to do, I started down the arduous and yet incredibly rewarding path of learning to like and love both myself and my body.

Yet, like any relationship, my relationship with my body and self is always evolving. Just when I think I’m pretty darn tuned in, I find a whole new layer of awareness I had no idea was there. To be honest, I think this actually delights me. How endlessly fascinating it is to never be done discovering new truths, depths, and information about one’s self! It’s not always comfortable. It’s not always a walk in the park. However, the rewards of going deeper, being willing to surrender to new levels of personal truth, and being ridiculously honest with yourself are absolutely worth it.

As usual, my body helped me out last year. It took on the miraculous and amazing project of nurturing a child inside it. As soon as I became pregnant, I became a mother. Wild hormones raced through my body, and I felt the urge to act like a grizzly bear with her cub, even though said cub was not even born yet. One day I took my niece to a movie and nearly murdered a woman who spoke rudely to her.  Quite suddenly, a new me was born. Mother Bear was awakened.

When I miscarried, the mother inside me did not go away. She remained. And something really spectacular took place. She nurtured me. She taught me even more about being compassionate with myself, setting boundaries, saying no, and treating myself with the same kind of honest, powerful mother-bear energy I would use for my child.

I got really honest with myself. I changed everything that wasn’t feeling right. I made new business decisions and decided to focus on my individual business and do less collaboration. I hired help in my business. I got inspired to create a whole new body of mind-body tools to use with my clients, my coach trainees, and myself. (I’d road tested them during my grieving process, and they really helped.)

Why am I telling you all of this? Because it just goes to show – this process of tuning in to your body, emotions, and soul is never done. It’s okay to be on this journey for a lifetime and never be perfect at all of this. Because you just can’t underestimate the power of taking a few moments to check in with your body, emotions, and soul. There is always something new to learn. There is always a new layer of deep peace awaiting you, right across the swamp of discomfort.

So, here I am again, one year later, sitting at my desk and preparing the new Mind-Body Coach Training.  I was seriously kidding myself when I thought I wouldn’t do another one. I love training coaches. I love watching them go out and use mind-body tools with their clients. I love watching them transform their own lives as they go through the training. It’s probably my favorite thing to do, above all else.

I’m also writing a new audio/visual product that will allow you to deepen your own mind-body process. I’m getting a whole new website built, and it’s completely different from what I thought it would be. I’ve also been hired to run Martha Beck’s Life Coach Training.

Nothing – not ONE little thing – looks like I thought it would when I envisioned this year. Everything – every SINGLE little thing – feels fabulous and perfect now. What if I hadn’t trusted myself? What if I hadn’t listened when my body asked me to?

I might not be in this moment, doing all these things I love. I might not know myself this much more. I might not have let my soul really sing, like it is now.

But I did it. I did listen. I paid attention to discomfort. I tuned in, even though there was pain, grief, sadness, anger, and fear. And now I AM here, in this moment. This is why it’s all worth it. This is what my soul was guiding me toward. Every time I go through this process in a big way, it turns out like this. Every time I tune in to myself in little ways, throughout the day, it turns out like this. It’s better than good. It’s more delicious than any delicacy. It’s challenging, engaging, and interesting, to be willing to live wide-awake like this. What can you learn from yourself, today, for you?
